Credit Repair Advice
We all know that life isn’t perfect. At some point or another
we may be faced with financial difficulty. A bad credit rating isn’t
the end of the world; it can happen to anyone at any time and there
are things you can do to improve your credit rating and get yourself
out of debt.

Credit repair is a general term often used to describe a systematic
process of rehabilitating an individual’s credit worthiness,
or financial credit reputation. Credit repair is a process you can
carry out yourself and sometimes the steps you can take are simple
although many people still believe credit repair to be a difficult
and daunting procedure.
When it comes to debt problems, self help may be the best option.
The most important thing to remember is not to try and ignore your
debt problems, if you do nothing about them they will not go away,
they will only get worse.
We’ve all seen the commercials on television of companies
claiming they can repair your credit rating but be warned - don’t
pay large fees to companies that claim to be able to remove information
from your credit file. Only genuinely incorrect information can
be removed and you can do this yourself by paying £2 to see
your credit file and then asking for any mistakes to be corrected.
Everything a credit repair clinic can do for you (legally) you can
do for yourself at little or no cost. Read your report thoroughly
and address any missing or incorrect items as soon as possible.
How does credit rating work? Before lending you money, creditors
want to determine how much of a risk you are – how likely
you are to repay the money they loan you. Credit scores help them
do that, and the higher your score, the less risk they feel you’ll
be. Credit scoring software looks at five areas of your credit reports;
your payment history, amounts you owe, length of your credit history,
types of credit used, your new credit.
There are things you can do to improve your debt problems and credit
score without having to pay out a large fee:
- Always pay your bills on time – late payments play
a major role in driving down your credit score.
- If you have any past-due bills, get up to date and stay
that way.
- Getting another loan is not the answer and will usually
only help you to get further into debt. Try to keep loan and credit
applications to a minimum. If you apply for loan after loan it makes
you look desperate in the eyes of the lender and will drive down
your credit rating.
- Contact your creditors as soon as you know you will have
a problem paying bills on time. Try to work out a payment arrangement
and negotiate with them to keep at least a portion of the late notations
off your credit report.
- If your situation is serious, seek the help of a legitimate,
non profit credit counsellor for debt management advice –
such as the Citizens Advice Bureau.
- CCJs (County Court Judgements) can be repaired. CCJs and
other information will stay on your file for 6 years although they
can be cancelled if the sum owing is paid within a month of the
judgement.
- Don’t avoid you problems, they only get worse. If
you are having trouble paying your debts contact your creditors
as soon as possible and advise them of the situation. Most creditors
will be happy receiving a small regular amount (for example £5
a month) rather than nothing at all. Some creditors may be willing
to write off most of your debt if you can pay them a lump sum outright,
which will help you to get your credit back on track.
